President Joe Biden is officially a great-grandpa! On Wednesday, January 8, the president shared that his oldest granddaughter Naomi Biden had given birth to a son in Los Angeles, California, making Joe the second president in history to become a great-grandparent. To celebrate the newest edition to America’s First Family, we have decided to look back at each member of the Biden family and dive deep into what their time in the White House has really been like. Keep scrolling for more.
President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.
President Joe Biden took office in 2021, making him the 46th person in history to hold that title. Prior to that he was former President Barack Obama’s vice president from 2009 until 2017 and was a Delaware senator from 1973 until 2009.
“I hope that history says that I came in and I had a plan how to restore the economy and reestablish America’s leadership in the world,” Joe told USA Today recently. “And I hope it records that I did it with honesty and integrity, that I said what was on my mind.”
Joe is 82 years old and is set to leave the White House in the upcoming weeks. His post-presidency plans have yet to be announced.
Neilia Hunter Biden
Joe married his first wife Neilia Hunter Biden in 1966. She was a teacher from Skaneateles, N.Y., and had three children with the president before her tragic death in 1972.
Neilia was killed in a car accident at 30 years old, alongside her daughter Naomi Christina Biden. Her two sons—Beau and Hunter Biden—were also involved in the crash, but only sustained minor injuries.
Neilia is laid to rest at the St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery in Greenville, Del.
Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III
On February 3, 1969 Joe became a father for the first time after his late wife Neilia brought Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III into the world.
Beau was best known for his work as an officer in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He married Hallie Olivere Biden in 2002 and the couple had two children together.
Beau died in 2015 from brain cancer. He was 46 years old.
Hunter Biden
Hunter Biden was born on February 4, 1970, and has recently made headlines for his tax indictment trial. Hunter pleaded guilty to these charges but has since been pardoned by his father.
Before his conviction, Hunter struggled with alcoholism and cocaine use.
“I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” Joe said in a statement. “Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given non-criminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.
“I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision [to pardon Hunter.”
Hunter has been married twice and has four kids, one of whom he fathered with an exotic dancer he once had an affair with. He also famously dated his late brother Beau’s wife Hallie, but that relationship ended after Hunter got arrested for buying an illegal firearm.
Naomi Christina Biden
Naomi Christina Biden was Joe and Neilia’s third and final child together. She was born on November 8, 1971, but as mentioned above tragically died in a car accident in 1972. Naomi was one year old at the time and is buried next to her mother.
Dr. Jill Biden
Joe married Dr. Jill Biden in 1977 after she divorced her first husband, Bill Stevenson, in 1975.
“What my husband does know how to do is tell the truth,” Jill said earlier this year. “When he gets knocked down, Joe gets back up, and that’s what we’re doing.”
Jill serves as The First Lady and has one biological child with Joe, Ashley Biden. Prior to her career in politics, she made headlines for her work as an educator and has continued to advocate for America’s schooling system since entering the White House.
Ashley Biden
Ashley Biden is Joe and Jill’s biological child. She was born in 1981 and has made quite a name for herself over the years as a political activist and social worker.
“Joe Biden is the O.G. girl dad,” Ashley said in her 2024 Democratic National Convention speech. Before he walked me down the aisle, he turned to me and said he would always be my best friend. All these years later, Dad, you are still my best friend.”
Ashley is 43 years old and is happily married to Howard Krien. The two have no children.
Naomi Biden
Named after her late aunt, Naomi Biden was Joe’s first grandchild. She was born in 1993 to Hunter and his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle in Washington D.C. and has a law degree from Columbia.
Naomi also famously married Peter George Heermann Neal on the White House lawn in 2022 and the two just welcomed their first child together, William Brannon Neal, IV.
Finnegan Biden
Finnegan Biden is Joe’s second granddaughter and Hunter’s second child with Buhle. Her name comes from Joe’s mother Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Finnegan who died in 2010.
Similar to a lot of people in her family, Finnegan attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2021. She is 24 years old.
Maisy Biden
Maisy Biden was born in 2001 to Hunter and Buhle and is good friends with President Obama’s daughter, Sasha.
“Her best friend is Sasha Obama,” Joe said in 2019. “Barack and Jill and the whole family, we had a whole get-together [for their high school graduation.]”
Maisy also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2023.
Natalie Biden
Natalie Biden was born in 2004 and is the daughter of Beau and Hallie, making her Joe’s granddaughter. Natalie prefers to keep out of the spotlight, but in 2021 she did tell Jenna Bush Hager how much she loves Thanksgiving at the White House.
“Thanksgiving is, I think, all of our favorite holidays,” she said. “Maisy and I and my grandpa and my uncle and my dad, we used to do the polar bear plunge in Nantucket in November.”
Natalie is a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania.
Robert Biden II
Beau and Hallie’s second son and Joe Biden’s grandson Robert Biden II was born in 2006. Not a lot is known about him, as he prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
Navy Joan Roberts
Born in 2018, Navy Joan Roberts is the daughter of Hunter and Lunden Roberts—the exotic dancer hehad an affair with.
Following her birth, Hunter and Lunden entered into a contentious child support dispute from 2019 until 2022 and it wasn’t until 2023 that Joe even publically acknowledged Navy.
“Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward,” the President said. “This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter.
“Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”
The child is now six years old, and both parents reportedly contribute to support her.
Beau Biden
In 2020 Hunter and his second wife Melissa Cohen welcomed their first child together. They named him after Hunter’s late brother. Baby Beau’s first public appearance was at Joe’s 2021 presidential inauguration.
William Brannon Neal, IV
Born on Wednesday, January 8 2025 William Brannon Neal, IV is Naomi and Peter’s first child, and Joe’s first great-grandchild.
“The good news is I’m a great-grandfather as of today,” Joe said in a statement. The First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden also released a picture of the president with their great-grandson her Instagram.
